Iceland Road Trip Itinerary

Iceland Road Trip Itinerary

by Ellie Eckert

How do I describe Iceland? Rather, where do I begin? If Iceland wasn't already on your bucket list, it is now. From incredible landscapes to long drives and cozy cafes, you get a little bit of everything in this 5-day itinerary.

Day 1: Reykjavik to Vik

You'll arrive in Reykjavik and pick up your rental. Ideally an SUV. If you're coming in from New York, you'll probably land early, leaving just enough time for a stop at Reykjavik Roasters. Sip, snack on a scone, then head to your reservation at Sky Lagoon. Let me tell you: there's nothing better after a long flight. Sky Lagoon offers a seven-step ritual, starting in the lagoon, then heading to a cold plunge, sauna, cold mist, body scrub, steam, and finally a shower. After all that, you’ll be ready for the drive to Vik.

Check in at Umi Hotel and explore the nearby black-sand beaches. Less than a hundred miles from Reykjavík, you’re deep in Iceland’s natural wonder, with views of the rugged southern coastline as well as Eyjafjallajökull, the famously inconvenient volcano.

Grab some dinner at the hotel and settle in for the night. Tomorrow, more adventure awaits.

Day 2: Vik

The thing about Iceland is that no matter how crowded the attractions are, there seems to never be traffic. Wake up early and head to Skogafoss for a hike. It's a wonder you won't want to miss. Once you've worked up a proper appetite, you'll drive down to the entrance of the parking lot for Mia's Country Van, aka, the best damn fish and chips in Iceland (don't quote me on this).

Walk it off with another hike at Seljalandsfoss, where you'll enter over a small handmade ladder at the back of a parking lot. Hike back and you'll be able to walk behind the waterfall.

Finish up the day at Víkurfjara Black Sand Beach if you're up for the ride.

Day 3:  Kirkjubaejarklaustur

Check out of Umi Hotel and get an early start to Skool Beans, a coffee shop in a school bus on the way to your next destination. Say hello to Sir Jeffarious, the resident cat, before heading to Kirkjubaejarklaustur. We're making way to Fjaðrárgljúfur, a majestic canyon known for its beauty and starring roles in some of television's best shows.

Finally, check into Magma, a cozy hotel where rooms have a view of a lake with grazing horses. Once you've settled, make your way to the bistro for dinner and drinks.

Day 4:  Vatnajökull National Park

With a bit of a drive ahead, you'll wake up early and make your way to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, nestled in Vatnajökull National Park. Jökulsárlón is filled with icebergs of all shapes and sizes. Hop on a boat tour if you want to get close to the icebergs, but even if you decide to stay shoreside, the views won't disappoint.

Day 5: Kirkjubaejarklaustur to Reykjavik

It's time to head back to Reykjavik, but on the way, consider stopping at Ingólfsskáli Viking Restaurant (because why not). In Reykjavik, you've got hotdogs with your name on them at Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur, and dinner reservations at Matur og drykkur restaurant.
